The Niederösterreich privat collection is the product of an overwhelmingly successful initiative from 2013 by the State of Lower Austria in collaboration with Filmarchiv Austria in which they called on people to submit their home movies in non-standard formats. A total of more than 70,000 films—in other words more than 9,000 hours of material—were submitted. These were then catalogued, archived, and digitized by Filmarchiv Austria, making this stock of moving images one of the largest local collections of amateur and home movies worldwide. These movies spanning nine decades of the 20th century show both extraordinary and everyday scenes as well as historical and cultural themes.
